Legalize Marijuana

I know many college students would probably agree that marijuana should be legalized for their own personal reasons. The fact of the matter is that, not only would it benefit those who smoke it for recreational use, but it could help stop pollution and would be responsible for curing many different diseases. The main reason it was banned in the first place was due to powerful people who were worried about their own industries being over powered. William Randolph Hearst is the core of the paper manufacturing division of Kimberly Clark and owned a vast majority of timberland acres. The Hearst Company supplied most of the paper products. The destroyer of natural land was now in competition with hemp and it could cost him billions. Because he was so powerful due to his wallet size he promoted the ban on marijuana saying it was a harmful drug. Also in the late 1930s a man named Dupont planted the processes to male plastic from oil and coal. Synthetics like plastic, cellophane, celluloid, nylon, rayon; etc could now be making from oil. The natural hemp industrialization would have ruined more than 80% of his business. When you have two very powerful people, with very powerful connections and a lot of money they can pretty much do whatever they want. The sad part is that cannabis would stop deforestation and would hopefully end the pollution due to production of synthetics like plastic. The main reason it would be legalized is because it is a natural resource. We have supposedly been looking for a renewable natural resource to be able to do all of these different things, and we found it, but because it was illegal for so long the idea of inertia comes into play here, the tendency to do nothing and remain the same. The cannabis oil can also be used as gasoline, no longer do we need to drill for oil which will eventually run out, we can use a NATURAL resource and stop pollution from cars. As well as stopping pollution, and being a natural resource it also has been proven to cure many different diseases and disorders. Anorexia, glaucoma, anxiety, nausea (helps AIDS and cancer patients through chemo) are just to name a few. Many say, well if its illegal than its illegal for a reason. It must be bad for you, smoking causes cancer and it impairs your thinking. Marijuana is proven to have no direct connection with any type of lung cancer, it how you smoke it that will get you sick. The weed itself has never harmed anyone, and if it is illegal because it impairs your thinking and motor skills, then why in the world is alcohol legal. Alcohol is sold in stores like candy and kids can get it many different ways. Just like alcohol marijuana should be used in moderation but it should not be completely illegal. It would literally solve so many problems and taxing it would boost the economy. Not only would we save 7 billion dollars due to drug prohibition enforcement, but the government would make another 6 billion off of it if it was taxed like alcohol and tobacco is taxed.
Overall there is absolutely no reason why marijuana is illegal, its just the governments way of letting us know they are in power and can pretty much do whatever they want, even if we've found the answer to the majority of the United States problems.

  1. You and I have had this conversation a few times over the past year. Before meeting you I had no idea the amount of good that would come about from legalizing marajuana. Not that I was against it, I just thought that all the "potheads" just wanted to do it to make things easier on them, which is completley false. The amount of money saved, let alone made on leagalizing marajuana is emmense. I think this argument has much more to say for itself now that the country is going into a recession. When you look around and see that our dollar has become so minimal compared to what it used to be, why wouldn't we turn to this? Saving 7 BILLION dollars and then proceeding to make anothe 6 BILLION. Open your eyes America!
